First impressions begin before someone walks through the front door. From the landscaping and building exterior to the lighting, cleanliness, and overall appearance, every detail tells a story. A well-maintained community helps residents, families, and visitors feel welcomed, comfortable, and confident in their surroundings.
As Plant Operations Director at The Summit Senior Living, I believe first impressions mean everything. They help prospective residents and families feel confident about choosing our community. Just as importantly, maintaining a clean and welcoming environment makes a difference for the people who already call The Summit home.
Every detail matters, and creating a positive first impression requires everyone to take pride in our surroundings.

For me, being tour-ready means our community should always be prepared to welcome someone, even if they arrive earlier than expected.
At The Summit, each department head is responsible for checking an assigned common area every morning. This helps us identify concerns early and keep our shared spaces clean, organized, and inviting throughout the day.
We also encourage everyone to stay observant as they move through the building. If something looks out of place, the goal is to correct it immediately rather than wait for someone else to notice.
Paint and wall maintenance are another important part of this routine. During Touch-Up Tuesday, my Plant Operations Assistant and I take our paint cart through the community to address areas needing attention.
We look for chipped paint, damaged drywall, and other small appearance concerns. We also clean doors and address marks that may affect the overall appearance of our spaces.
Having supplies ready makes it easier to complete multiple touch-ups efficiently. By dedicating time to these details each week, we can prevent minor concerns from accumulating.
Landscaping also plays an important role in creating a welcoming environment. I believe maintaining high standards starts with knowing what our grounds should look like.
When I notice dead or declining plants, dry landscaping, or areas that need attention, I want to address those concerns promptly. Healthy, well-maintained landscaping helps create a positive impression before visitors enter the building.
Lighting is equally important, particularly after dark. Working exterior lights help residents and team members feel safer when walking through the parking areas at night.
They also contribute to the appearance of our community. A well-lit building can create a beautiful, welcoming impression in the evening.
During interior and exterior walkthroughs, we look for lights that are out or fixtures needing attention. Identifying these concerns early allows us to arrange repairs or replacements in a timely manner.
One of our First Impressions successes at The Summit has been the consistency of our everyday maintenance routines.
A small paint chip or insects collected inside a light fixture may seem insignificant. However, when these details are overlooked, they can affect how visitors perceive the entire community.
Our approach is to make those details part of our regular maintenance routines. Touch-Up Tuesday gives us dedicated time for paint repairs, while daily walkthroughs help us identify lighting and cleanliness concerns.
This is something other Plant Operations Directors can easily implement. Consistent inspections, assigned responsibilities, and quick attention to minor issues can make a noticeable difference.
It also helps when department heads share responsibility for the appearance of common areas. With more people looking out for concerns, there are more opportunities to address them before visitors notice.
For me, first impressions are not just about preparing for a tour or an inspection. They are about maintaining a community that looks and feels welcoming every day.
By working together and paying attention to the little things, we help ensure The Summit Senior Living remains a place residents are proud to call home.
