Moving into a senior living community is a major life transition. There is often excitement about new opportunities and friendships. There can also be uncertainty as residents adjust to a new home and routine.
One of the most valuable resources we have during that transition is our Resident Ambassador program. Resident Ambassadors help create connections and offer encouragement. They also provide peer-to-peer support that can make a new resident feel welcome from day one.
Their willingness to reach out matters. By sharing their experiences and inviting others into community life, they help turn neighbors into friends and a community into home.
As Resident Services Director at The Summit, I have seen firsthand the difference these resident leaders make. These resident leaders help new residents feel comfortable, connected, and engaged.
A successful move-in experience means a new resident never has to wonder, “What do I do next?” At The Summit, the goal is to support residents through each phase. No one should feel alone, unsure, or lost.
That support may mean helping a new resident find someone to sit with at lunch or dinner. It may also mean walking with them to an activity. Sometimes, it means introducing them to neighbors or helping them know where to go. Each step can reduce the uncertainty that comes with moving into a new home.
Resident Ambassadors make that transition feel more personal. Each floor has a Resident Ambassador. During monthly meetings, the team reviews new move-ins for the month. Together, they discuss who will help welcome each resident.
When move-in day arrives, ambassadors have the welcome bag ready. They review the contents with the new resident. Helpful information is explained, and questions are answered. Ambassadors also make sure the resident feels included in meals and activities.
Some of the most meaningful welcomes happen around the dining table. Walking into the dining room for the first time can feel intimidating. It can feel almost like walking into a new school. A friendly face nearby helps ease that feeling. It also makes the first few meals more comfortable.
Ambassadors often sit with new residents for meals. They invite them to activities and introduce them to others. These simple gestures can make a lasting difference.

Pat, one of the community’s ambassadors, is especially gifted at welcoming residents with open arms. She once invited a new resident to bingo and shared a meal with her. The new resident felt deeply touched by that kindness and care.
Residents often respond quickly to other residents because they share the same lived experience. Team members care deeply and provide important support. Still, residents understand what daily life in the community feels like. The routines, dining experience, activities, and small tips are familiar to them. That shared perspective creates a natural bond.
Resident Ambassadors help shape the overall culture of The Summit. They are a light in the community. By promoting positivity, building relationships, and welcoming new and familiar faces, they set a kind tone. Their love for the community shows in the way they include others. Through warmth and encouragement, they create a safe place. Residents can feel connected, involved, and at home.
Resident Ambassadors do far more than welcome new residents. They help build the culture of our community. Through kindness, friendship, and a willingness to include others, they create an environment where people feel seen, valued, and connected.
The move-in process may only last a few days. The relationships formed during that time can have a lasting impact. We are grateful for the Resident Ambassadors who help make our community a place where every resident feels like they belong.
