Building Connection Through Community

Building a Community of Belonging

As Resident Services Director at The Summit Senior Living at Chenal Valley, I’ve seen firsthand how a strong sense of community transforms senior living from a place to stay into a place to truly thrive. Building connections among residents, team members, and even the surrounding neighborhood isn’t just a nice-to-have — it’s essential for fostering well-being, joy, and purpose.

Creating community starts with understanding what makes each resident feel valued and included. It’s about designing experiences that spark conversation, laughter, and shared memories. Whether it’s a small group event, a holiday celebration, an Act of Service, or a themed event, these moments strengthen relationships and help residents feel like they belong.

From my perspective, every interaction is an opportunity to weave the fabric of community. When residents feel connected, they enjoy their days more fully and experience the emotional and social benefits that come from genuine human connection.

To me, community in a senior living setting is built in the small, meaningful moments — laughing together at lunch, celebrating milestones, or simply sharing stories. It means creating an environment where everyone feels seen, valued, and cared for. At The Summit, residents are more than neighbors; they’re family.

Encouraging Connection Through Shared Experiences

Building connections among residents is essential because these relationships often become pillars of strength in times of need. Whether someone is grieving a loss or celebrating a health milestone, having people to lean on makes all the difference. Genuine connections cultivate comfort, resilience, and joy in everyday life.

I encourage residents to engage with one another by creating opportunities that feel natural, comfortable, and fun. Activities such as small group games, themed socials, cooking demonstrations, and memory-sharing events inspire laughter, conversation, and friendship. Each interaction helps residents find common ground and form lasting bonds.

I also connect our community with the surrounding town by both inviting others in and venturing out. We partner with local businesses, schools, and organizations to create shared experiences — from supporting local shops to hosting children’s groups who bring music and joy to our residents. These interactions strengthen our ties to the greater community and enrich daily life.

One of my favorite events that brings people together is chair beachball. It blends friendly competition, laughter, and teamwork, creating a sense of camaraderie that can be felt all the way down the hall. Moments like these truly capture the heart of community life.

Welcoming New Residents With Warmth

To help new residents feel welcome, I personally visit their room to introduce myself, often with one of our Resident Ambassadors by my side. This warm introduction helps them meet both staff and peers right away. I also make a point to stop by often during their first few weeks, offering personal invitations to events and ensuring they know they’re seen, valued, and never forgotten.

At the heart of our community, connections are everything. Every conversation, shared laugh, and meaningful interaction enriches the lives of our residents. As Resident Services Director at The Summit Senior Living at Chenal Valley, I’ve seen how intentional efforts to foster these connections can transform daily life — turning our building into a true home and creating moments that residents and families will treasure.

By prioritizing relationships, engagement, and a sense of belonging, we’re not just planning events — we’re building a vibrant, supportive community where everyone can thrive. Ultimately, it’s the connections we nurture that make all the difference.
