Do you remember the days when the lunch bell rang, signaling the excitement of discovering the treasures hidden in your lunch box? Join me as I take a trip down memory lane, revisiting some items—some I’d rather forget—and the iconic snacks and treats that fueled my childhood adventures and satisfied my youthful cravings.
Growing up, I relied on school-provided lunches, often my only meal of the day. My mother raised nine kids alone and worked two jobs, so she had no time or money to make packed lunches. The strangest thing I encountered on the school menu was coleslaw with raisins. I tried it once, and it’s why I avoid coleslaw to this day.
If I could recreate any lunch item, it would be the sausage square pizza—the only dish I genuinely looked forward to. The ultimate school lunch menu would feature a fried bologna sandwich with kettle chips inside, a banana, and a Crush peach pop.
It is important to ensure a well-balanced and nutritious meal, including fresh fruit, veggies, protein, and a drink. Packing your lunch allows you to control exactly what you eat.
I’d love to see a turkey tail, chicken wings, a burger slider, and ribs in a dinner box.
Even though we’ve traded our lunch boxes for grown-up alternatives and our tastes have evolved over time, the nostalgia of those beloved treats still reminds us of the innocence and delight of youth. I hope you can find some classic favorites and discover new tempting treats every time you visit The Summit at Chenal Valley Senior Living Bistro or Country Kitchen and that you never stop making culinary memories.
